IMSP Republican Rehabilitation Center for Children was equipped with the standardized Bayley-4 test for assessing the abilities of children, infants and young children (1-42 months). This contribution is of particular value, as it allowed the Early Intervention Service to be equipped with the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Fourth Edition (Bayley-4) – an essential tool both for the initial assessment of child development and for monitoring the progress achieved following rehabilitation interventions. The implementation of this test in current practice strengthens the center’s ability to identify delays early and adapt intervention plans to the real needs of each child. The center’s team is going to make the official translation and validation of this tool at the country level – a first for the Republic of Moldova! Bayley-4 is an internationally standardized tool, used for the early assessment of the development of children aged between 1 and 42 months (approx. 3.5 years). The test provides detailed information about the level of development and possible delays, and is frequently used in pediatrics, psychology, rehabilitation and research.
Bayley-4 assesses five main areas of child development:
1. Cognitive – attention, memory, problem solving, exploration.
2. Language – understanding receptive language and verbal expression.
3. Motor – fine motor skills (manipulation, coordination) and gross motor skills (gait, posture, movement).
4. Socio-emotional – interaction with adults and children, expression of emotions, regulation of behavior.
5. Adaptive behaviors – self-care, orientation, play, functional autonomy.
Advantages of Bayley-4:
• Detects developmental delays early.
• Provides a detailed profile, useful for personalized intervention plans.
• Includes parent-reported scales for the socio-emotional and adaptive domains.
• Can be applied by trained clinical psychologists, physicians, and rehabilitation specialists.
Utility:
The Bayley-4 is used both for screening and differential diagnosis, and for monitoring progress in interventions (e.g. rehabilitation programs, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy).
